SYRACUSE, N.Y. -Â Coming off a 3-0 week against BCS schools at the Paradise Jam, including an upset of No. 12 Texas A&M, Syracuse (8-0) is ranked 22nd in this week's Associated Press Women's Basketball Top 25, its first ranking this season.
Â
The Orange, off to an 8-0 start for the fifth time in program history and the third time in the last five years under head coach Quentin Hillsman, breaks into the AP top 25 for the first time since finishing last season ranked No. 22 when it was 24-8 overall and made the NCAA Tournament. The Orange received 132 points, one more than the Aggies, who dropped from 12th to 23rd.
Â
Syracuse posted convincing double-digit wins over Texas (77-65), Memphis (77-58) and No. 12/11 Texas A&M (78-63) to win Reef Division title at the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands last week, giving the Orange four wins away from home against BCS schools. SU opened the season with a 69-65 win at Washington State.
Â
Saturday's win over the Aggies, who were ranked No. 12 by the AP and No. 11 by the coaches, was the highest ranked opponent Syracuse has beaten since knocking off No. 6/6 Ohio State, 75-66, at the Carrier Dome on Dec. 11, 2010.
Â
SU makes the jump to No. 22 this week after getting one vote last week, its first of the season. The Orange has received votes in all four USA TODAY coaches polls this season. The latest coaches poll will be announced on Tuesday.
Â
The only other team cracking into the top 25 this week is who the Orange will face on the road Thursday in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge - Iowa. The No. 25 Hawkeyes (8-1) are coming off a 3-0 week at the Cancun Challenge with wins vs. USC, Boston College and UNC-Wilmington. Thursday's game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
Â
The 2012-13 Orange was ranked in the top 25 in the final seven polls of the season, peaking at an all-time program high of No. 21 on Feb. 18.
