BURLINGTON, Vt.—The Syracuse ice hockey team (10-8-2) swept Vermont after taking a 3-2 victory over the Catamounts (8-9-4) on Sunday afternoon in Gutterson Fieldhouse. Larissa Martyniuk scored the game-winning goal mid-way through the third period and the Orange defense held off UVM to earn its third consecutive victory.
Â
SU is back in action on Friday, Dec. 10 at Rochester Institute of Technology to take on the Tigers in Syracuse's only game of the weekend.
"This was another good, back-and-forth game for both teams today," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "We squandered a two-goal lead in the third period but got a big goal from Martyniuk and we weathered the storm in the final five minutes as they came at us pretty hard. Jenesica Drinkwater made some outstanding saves and our defensive corps held tough for the win."
Â
Six different Orange skaters earned a point against the Catamounts while senior goalie Drinkwater earned her sixth win of the season (6-1-0). Drinkwater recorded a .929 save percentage and allowed two goals, one on the power play.
Â
Vermont put 28 shots on target while Syracuse needed only 19 for the win, one more than its season low. The Orange controlled the faceoff circle, winning 27-of-45 tries including the final three of the game to stop the Catamounts from getting any shots off in the final two minutes.
Â
Syracuse jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Nicole Renault scored her third goal of the season 10 minutes into the game on the power play. The Orange worked the puck around to Kallie Goodnough at the top of the right faceoff circle and she took a hard shot that Renault was able to redirect in front of the goal for the first score of the game.
Â
Vermont and SU took turns controlling the puck for most of the second period. The Orange nearly took a two-goal advantage with seven minutes to go before the second intermission when Akane Hosoyamada attempted to tip in a shot from the right side by Jessica Sibley but it hit the pipe and the score remained at 1-0 at the end of the period.
Â
The third period was a shootout, with each team scoring two goals in the final 20 minutes of play. The Orange got on the board again with 15:04 remaining in the game to take a 2-0 lead. Melissa Piacentini took the puck in front of the goal and managed to flick it past Douville while she was diving to gain control of it to give Syracuse a cushion to finish the game.
Â
Vermont ended the shutout just over two minutes later when Sarah Kelley scored the first Catamount goal of the day, bringing the score to 2-1 with 12:41 to go in the third period.
Â
UVM scored the equalizer with 8:18 left in the game, bringing the score to 2-2 when a shot by Amanda Pelkey bounced off Drinkwater's pad and into the goal while on the power play.
Â
Syracuse only allowed it to stay tied for just over two minutes, regaining the lead when Larissa Martyniuk sent in the go-ahead goal after a shot from the top of the left circle by fellow freshman Heather Schwarz, ultimately giving the Orange its second win of the weekend.
The Orange controlled the puck for the remaining six minutes and 29 seconds, allowing just three UVM shots which were all saved by Drinkwater.
