Notre Dame Edges Orange in Overtime

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Notre Dame goalkeeper Liz O'Sullivan made a save on junior Kayla Treanor's free position attempt with 1:45 remaining in overtime to seal the No. 13/13 Fighting Irish's 12-11 victory against the No. 7/6 Orange on Tuesday, April 7. It was Syracuse's eighth one-goal game this season and fifth in its last seven contests.

Junior Halle Majorana netted the first goal of the second half to give the Orange (9-5, 2-3) a 5-4 lead with 25:37 on the clock. Syracuse would go without a goal for more than 10 minutes as Notre Dame (8-5, 3-3) scored three straight goals to take a 7-5 lead. Senior Devon Collins broke the scoring drought for the Orange on an assist from Treanor to get the Orange within one at 7-6 at the 14:02 mark and the teams traded goals before junior Taylor Gait recorded back-to-back goals, both on assists from Treanor, to tie the score at 9-9.

Heidi Annaheim put Notre Dame back on top, but junior Erica Bodt answered for the Orange to even the score at 10-10. Both goalkeepers made saves in the final 30 seconds of regulation to force overtime.

The Fighting Irish took the lead for good on Rachel Sexton's goal with 54 seconds left in the first three-minute session of overtime. Caitlin Gargan added another goal 12 seconds later to extend Notre Dame's lead to 12-10. Collins recorded her third goal of the game on an assist from Majorana to get the Orange within one at 12-11 heading into the second three-minute session of overtime.

Syracuse won the draw to start the second session of OT. Bodt earned a free position, but her shot went high. The Orange maintained possession and Treanor earned the squad's fourth free position of the second three-minute period. O'Sullivan made the save and Barbara Sullivan picked up the ground ball and Notre Dame was able to run out the clock to snap a five-game losing streak to the Orange.

Majorana led the Orange with six points (2g, 4a), while Treanor finished with five points (1g, 4a). Collins and Gait each scored three goals. Sexton and Stephanie Toy had three goals apiece for Notre Dame.

Syracuse outshot Notre Dame 29-22, while the Fighting Irish picked up 22 ground balls to 18 for the Orange. Syracuse held a 17-9 advantage in the draw circle. SU goalkeeper Kelsey Richardson made five saves, while O'Sullivan finished with nine.

The Orange goes on the road this weekend to face No. 2/2 North Carolina on Saturday, April 11 at noon in Chapel Hill.
