SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's ice hockey team could not have a dreamed of a better start on Friday night at Tennity Ice Pavilion against No. 5 Colgate, but the Raiders made an impressive comeback to take a 3-2 win.
Two minutes after puck drop, Stephanie Grossi put the Orange on the board on a short-handed goal with assists from Alysha Burriss and Dakota Derrer. A little over a minute later, Kelli Rowswell put Syracuse ahead 2-0.
Colgate chipped away at the lead with a goal late in the first period. The game was scoreless for most of the second period, but the Raiders got one to go with three minutes left to tie up the game, 2-2. Then with 4:30 left in the game, Colgate scored the game-winner on the power play.
"I thought we got off to a good start, we had energy, I thought we were winning a lot of battles and racing for loose pucks," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "But it's a 60-minute game."
For Grossi, it was her first goal of the season and 24th of her career. Rowswell scored the first goal of her Syracuse career in her fifth game with the Orange.
Syracuse and Colgate have a quick turnaround for the second game of the series. The Raiders host the Orange on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Class of 1965 Arena.
