Day and Peterson combined for 43 points
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Prior to the start of its contest against Georgia Tech on Feb. 7, the Syracuse University women's basketball program recognized senior guard Brianna Butler and redshirt junior guard Brittney Sykes for milestones in their collegiate careers. Butler and Sykes made significant contributions against the Yellow Jackets, but ultimately it was the play of juniors Briana Day and Alexis Peterson that propelled the Orange to a 71-52 win.
Â
"Briana Day was tremendous," head coach Quentin Hillsman stated. "I thought she was amazing. Alexis was good today. When you get those two playing well, you're going to win a lot of games."
Â
Peterson led the club with 22 points on the day, while Day added 21 points against Georgia Tech. It marked the first time since Nov. 19, 2014 that the Orange had two players score at least 20 points in a single game.
Â
The duo's impact was not only felt in the scoring department. Peterson dished out a team-high four assists and recorded four steals on the day, as well. On the other hand, Day pulled down 12 boards and blocked five shots. In the process, she earned her 20th double-double of her collegiate career and moved into fifth place on the program's career blocked shots list.
Â
"I really think her performance today was huge for us," Peterson said of Day. "It freed up our guards. That's what we need."
Â
With the play of Day and Peterson, the Orange have been a tough team to defeat, as of late. On the team's current four-game win streak, the duo has combined for 98 of the team's 273 points scored. That also includes the club's victory against Boston College on Jan. 27, which Peterson missed.
Â
Syracuse travels to Charlottesville, Va. for its next contest as it takes on Virginia on Thursday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Regional Sports Networks.
