BOSTON – Six former Orange from the Syracuse women's lacrosse program were selected in the United Women's Lacrosse League's inaugural draft on Wednesday, April 13. Three of the top 10 picks were former Syracuse players.
Â
The United Women's Lacrosse League (UWLX) looks to play its inaugural season this spring and summer. The league is comprised of four teams: Philadelphia Force, Boston Storm, Long Island Sound and Baltimore Ride.
Â
Current Syracuse assistant coach and former attacker Michelle Tumolo '13 was the third overall pick in the draft. She was selected by the Philadelphia Force. As a member of the Orange, Tumolo made her mark on the record books with 141 career goals, 137 assists and 278 points over three seasons. She ranks second in career assists in the Syracuse record list. Tumolo was the IWLCA Attacker of the Year and Tewaaraton Award finalist in her junior year. She is a current member of the U.S. National Team.
Â
Going fourth in the draft and the final pick of the first round was goalkeeper Liz Hogan '11 to the Boston Storm. Hogan holds the Syracuse record for career saves with 660 from 2008-11. She led the Orange to their first NCAA Final Four appearance in 2008, a feat the squad repeated in the 2010 season.
Â
Syracuse attack Alyssa Murray '14 was the seventh pick of the draft by the Force, joining Tumolo. Murray ranks second on the Syracuse career points list with 362. With the 14th pick, the Long Island Sound selected defender Becca Block '13. Block was the core of an Orange defense that held its opponents to less than 10 goals in 13 games in her senior season.
Â
In the seventh round, the Boston Storm chose Syracuse attacker Kailah Kempney '15 with the 32nd pick. Kempney holds the second NCAA single-season record for draw controls with 186 in her senior season. Katie Rowan '09, a former Syracuse attacker and the current head coach of Wagner women's lacrosse squad, was the 34th pick by the Long Island Sound.
Â
With the first pick of the draft, the Baltimore Ride selected Katie Schwarzmann, a midfielder from Maryland (2013).
Â
The historic event, aired on Lax Sports Network, featured 40 selections from a pool of 250 athletes. Current NCAA seniors were not included and will be drafted in the post-collegiate draft following Memorial Day weekend NCAA Tournament play.
