Orange Shine on UWLX Opening Day
5/31/2016 3:03:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
United Women's Lacrosse League (UWLX) play opened up this past weekend in the league's inaugural season. Eight former Orange suited up, on May 28 in the first-ever professional women's lacrosse games.
Â
The early matchup featured the Baltimore Ride and the Long Island Sound. Long Island topped Baltimore, 13-12, off of a Lindsay Scott Goal with 42 seconds left in the contest. The Boston Storm took the second game, 16-8, over the Philadelphia Force.
Â
Former Tewaaraton Award finalist Katie Rowan '09 tallied one goal for the Long Island Sound. A former assistant coach with the Orange, Rowan just completed her first season as head coach at Wagner. Becca Block '13, who was the 14th overall pick in the draft, anchored Long Island's defense to the first-ever win in UWLX history.
Â
Kailah Kempney '15 put home the first goal in Boston Storm history on her way to a league-leading four-goal performance. Â In net for the Storm, Liz Hogan '11 lived up to her first-round hype, tallying nine saves while allowing only two second-half goals. Kasey Mock '14, who earned second-team All-America honors in 2014, also helped anchor the Boston defense.
Â
On the other side, Katie Webster '14 notched a goal for Philadelphia. The goal gave the Force a 6-5 advantage, before Boston came storming back.  The Force features two other former Orange student-athletes – current assistant coach Michelle Tumolo and two-time Tewaaraton Award finalist Alyssa Murray. Tumolo did not play in the contest as she was with the Orange at the NCAA Championship weekend.
Â
UWLX action picks up again on Friday, June 10 as the Boston Storm square against the Baltimore Ride at 6 p.m. Then on Saturday the Long Island Sound go head-to-head with the Philadelphia Force at 2 p.m. Both games will be played in Amherst, Mass.
