SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's soccer team tied with Colgate on Friday night in a 1-1 defensive battle in Hamilton, N.Y. The Orange will be back in action on Sunday against Delaware at the SU Soccer Stadium at 1 p.m.
"I thought we did a really good job of being organized for the most part especially as the game wore on," said head coach Phil Wheddon. "On the attacking side of things, I thought we created a ton of chances. We had 22 shots to their five shots and I'm happy with that. We just need to execute."
Syracuse opened the game with a bang, scoring only 45 seconds in on a Sheridan Street header. After an Orange shot that bounced off of the crossbar, Street caught the ball off the bounce and sent it into the net past the Colgate goalkeeper.
Colgate answered just before halftime with a score from about 20 yards out that resulted from a corner kick. Orange goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan made a spectacular diving save in the first half on a shot that looked all but in for the Raiders.
The second half and the overtime periods were a defensive standstill between the two teams with neither team scoring the remainder of the game.
The Orange threatened on several occasions, including when Sydney Brackett swept past the Colgate keeper who had come out of the box. Another Colgate defender came in and made a play just in time to deflect the ball away from the goal.
Four Syracuse freshmen made their debuts tonight in Hamilton. Taylor Bennett, Opal Curless, Carolin Bader and Brackett each started and played significant minutes for the Orange. Brackett led the team with six shots on the night.
"[The freshmen] are hungry, willing to work and learn," said Wheddon. "Tonight was great experience for them. Colgate moved the ball well and made them chase. It was a good exercise for us in making sure that we can maintain our shape."
Sunday's home opener opponent, Delaware, finished last season with an 8-9-2 record. The Blue Hens advanced to the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament last year. The 2015 season leading scorer Natalie Zelenky is back for the Blue Hens after scoring 11 goals last season. Delaware is a first-time opponent for the Orange.
