SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse (1-0-1) women's soccer team started off the home season with a 2-0 win against Delaware (0-2-0) on a rainy Sunday afternoon at the SU Soccer Stadium.
"I thought we moved the ball well and I thought our team shape was very, very good," said head coach Phil Wheddon. "Obviously, you hope to get some good individual performances and I thought we had that today from three or four different people."
Alanna O'Neill had a career night, scoring both goals for the Orange in the second half. Her first score came when Alex Lamontagne found a streaking O'Neill with a cross pass for the first score of the game. The insurance goal came after a Taylor Bennett shot bounced off the crossbar into the air and landed in front of O'Neill. The junior punched in the put back before the Delaware goalkeeper could recover.
"I think we were possessing well and we were able to play our game, given the conditions," said O'Neill. "This was a great confidence boost for the team."
The Orange outshot the Blue Hens 18-3 in the game and had 14 corner kicks. Offensively, Syracuse put the pressure on Delaware with seven shots on goal. Every few minutes the Orange would make a threat to score, keeping the Blue Hens on edge.
Syracuse goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan finished with a save and recorded her first shutout of the season and eighth of her career. The Syracuse defense didn't allow a shot from Delaware in the second half and only three total in the game.
With the win, Syracuse improves to 1-0-1 on the season after a draw against Colgate on Sunday.
Syracuse is back in action next weekend with matches on Friday and Sunday at the SU Soccer Stadium. On Friday, the Orange will square off with Army at 3 p.m. and will take on Albany on Sunday at 1 p.m.
