9/22/2017 4:58:00 PM | Cross Country
Led by Colin Bennie, Philo Germano and Aidan Tooker all finishing in the top-five, the No. 3 Syracuse men's cross country team collected 35 points to win the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown on Friday.
Paige Stoner took third to lead the women to a sixth place finish.
For the men, it was their second victory in a row at the meets it competed, winning in 2015 as well before racing at the Panorama Farms Invitational last season in lieu of this event. 'Cuse also has second place finishes here in 2013 and 2014.
It was the season debut for Bennie and Germano, who finished in 24:13 and 24:14 respectively. They were edged at the line by an Illinois duo of Jesse Reiser and Jonathan Davis, who finished in 24:12 and 24:13. Tooker rounded out the top-five with a mark of 24:14 over the 8k course.
Kevin James (24:38) finished in 11th and Joe Dragon (24:39) took 12th. Mickey Burke (24:42) Simon Smith (24:42) and Dominic Hockenbury (24:45) turned in a top-20 finish as well, taking 17th-19th.
The Orange's team win comes with standout Justyn Knight serving as the lone returning All-American yet to make his season debut. With Knight's track season extending into mid-August at the IAAF World Championships, he's been held out of the early season meets to recover.
Behind Stoner's podium finish, Madeleine Davison was the second Syracuse racer to cross the line, taking 22nd in 17:47. Shannon Malone was not far behind, finishing in 17:51, which was good for 27th.
Rachel Bonner (18:16) and Taylor Spillane (18:31) finished in 49th and 64th, respectively to round out the scoring.
Eva Scott (18:31), Kelsey Potts (18:59), Chelsie Pennello (19:05), Maggie Toczko (19:09) and Olivia Elston (19:32) also raced the 5k course
