BEMIDJI, Minn. – Senior goaltender Abbey Miller recorded 30 saves as the Syracuse ice hockey team (0-0-1) battled Bemidji State (0-0-1) to a 0-0 tie after 65 minutes of back-and-forth action on Friday. The Orange tallied 12 blocks on defense, led by senior Dakota Derrer who notched six during the game.
"It was a great game to open the season with," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "Both teams battled hard and both goalies made some exceptional saves throughout the game. Our penalty kill did a great job and overall our defensive play was superb."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The game came down to the goaltenders as the two net-minders combined for 63 saves in the game. Miller tallied her 10th career shutout and is the all-time leader in program history for career shutouts. Syracuse outshot the Beavers 33-30, including a 3-2 mark in overtime, but the Beavers' goalie kept the Orange from finding the back of the net.
OF NOTE
The Orange are now 1-2-1 all-time when opening the season on the road. This is just the fourth time in program history that 'Cuse has opened the year on the road. Syracuse has recorded a tie to open the season just once before in school history when the Orange took Northeastern to a 4-4 overtime tie in 2010.
UP NEXT
The Orange and the Beavers close out the two-game set on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Bemidji, Minn. Following the series, Syracuse returns home to face Wisconsin in the home opener on Oct. 6.
