SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Freshman forward Abby Moloughney's goal midway through the opening period was the Orange's first and last of the game, as the Syracuse hockey team and Princeton battled to a 1-1 overtime tie Saturday afternoon inside Tennity Ice Pavilion.
Syracuse stands at 4-6-1 overall, including a 4-2-0 mark in College Hockey America play, following the tie.
Princeton opened an early lead after scoring five minutes into the first period. The Orange, however, would not let their one-goal deficit last for long.
Moloughney scored her second goal of the season seven minutes later to even the game at one. Redshirt junior defenseman Lindsay Eastwood earned an assist on Moloughney's equalizer.
The game had all the makings of an offensive shootout, but Moloughney's goal at 11:50 in the first period would be the last of the day from either side. Syracuse outshot Princeton, 31-22, in the game, but the Orange could not convert any scoring opportunities, including five power play chances.
Syracuse's defense, meanwhile, held its ground, killing a 5-on-3 late in the third period to keep the game locked at 1-1.
OF NOTE
Senior goaltender Maddi Welch started in net and came up with 21 saves. She has allowed just three goals and recorded 57 saves across her last three starts.
Moloughney led the team with seven shots on net, while senior defenseman Allie Munroe had six shots on net, as well as three blocks. Freshman forward Lauren Bellefontaine also had three blocks.
HEAR MORE FROM COACH FLANAGAN
"Both teams had chances. We had more power plays, but they had a 5-on-3, so that all evened out. It was a pretty good game, and the team's disappointed that they didn't get the win, especially after killing the 5-on-3. But the score was 1-1, so we're not defeated."
"[Maddi Welch] saved great shots they had, so pretty much it was even. They killed us on faceoffs, so that's an area we have to improve on. I give Princeton credit; they have some set players and their centers are really good."
WHAT LIES AHEAD
Syracuse continues its series against Princeton tomorrow. The contest between the Orange and the Tigers begins at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at Tennity Ice Pavilion.

"I thought it was a pretty good game," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "Princeton is a really good skating team, and I think we felt that we had to keep our feet moving. They have good skill up front, and it is one of those games where there's going to be a lot of contact. All in all, I thought we had our chances, and I bet their coach is saying they had their chances."
