Calof Nets First Career Goal in Orange's Loss to No. 10 Colgate

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Freshman defenseman Shelby Calof added her name to the stat sheet Thursday night at Tennity Ice Pavilion, scoring her first collegiate goal and earning her first career point in the Syracuse women's hockey team's 5-2 loss to No. 10 Colgate.
The Orange move to 4-13-1 overall with the setback against the nationally-ranked Raiders.
"Shelby's still earning her stripes, but it was nice to see her get her first goal and first point," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "It was a good start for us, but it was a poor defensive effort on a lot of shots. That first period was as bad as I've seen one of my teams play since I've been here."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Calof's goal came five minutes into the opening period. Her quick strike, assisted by junior forward Logan Hicks, gave the Orange an early 1-0 advantage, and it was their first lead since Nov. 4.
Syracuse's fast start came crashing down a little over a minute later. Colgate's Delani MacKay capitalized on a power-play opportunity, finding the back of the net with a shot to even the game at one. The Raiders would go on two score twice more in the closing minutes of the first period and enter the intermission with a 3-1 lead.
Nemo Neubauerova scored both of Colgate's final two goals in the first period, with her second goal proving to be the game winner.
A scoreless second period kept the game deadlocked at 3-1, but the third period provided fireworks from the start. Freshman forward Lauren Bellefontaine's goal at the start of the third cut the Orange's deficit to one.
The Raiders scored twice more, however, tacking on a power-play goal before putting the game out of reach on an empty netter.
OF NOTE
Bellefontaine's goal was her fifth of the season. She has the second most on the team behind sophomore forward Emma Polaski (8 goals), and her 11 points this season rank second best.Â
Senior defenseman Allie Munroe tallied an assist on Bellefontaine's goal. The native of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, has a team-high 10 assists this year and leads the Orange in points (13).
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The second leg of the home-and-home series against Colgate continues this weekend. The puck drops at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8 in Hamilton, N.Y.
