Syracuse, N.Y. - Syracuse University's 12th-ranked field hockey team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-0 win over Bucknell (4-3) on Sunday afternoon at J.S. Coyne Stadium. The shutout victory marks the second time this season the Orange have held an opponent scoreless. 'Cuse improves to 4-3 overall.
Â
The Orange looked to regroup from Friday's loss against Atlantic Coast Conference foe No. 4 Duke and did just that on all sides of the ball on Sunday. The game started as a defensive battle, with both sides exchanging possession. Each time Bucknell posed a threat Borg van der Velde was right there to stop them.
Chiara Gutsche scored off a corner in the 24th minute giving the Orange a 1-0 lead. Senior Roos Weers and freshman Tess Queen were credited with the assist. Syracuse held the 1-0 advantage into halftime after out-shooting Bucknell 6-3 in the opening frame.
Â
In the 50th minute, Carolin Hoffmann inserted a corner and found Claire Webb who set up Weers for the second 'Cuse goal of the game. Less than ten minutes later freshman Peyton Kemp tipped in her first career goal on a shot by Laura Grazisoi, giving the Orange some insurance in the 59th minute.
Â
Van der Velde made four saves in goal for the Orange matching Bucknell's Olivia Harris' four stops. Syracuse edged the Bison 6-4 in penalty corners had 12 shots, seven on goal, while Bucknell had nine total.
Â
The Orange remain home to face Pacific on Friday, Sept. 21, at 5:30 p.m. and Penn on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 1p.m. Both games will be live on ACC Network Extra. Syracuse will recognize the 2008 NCAA Final Four team during multiple events throughout the weekend as part of a 10th anniversary celebration for the first field hockey ream in school history to read the national semifinals.
