Women take second behind No. 12 Penn State
The No. 10 Syracuse men's cross country team won the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational for the third-straight season, taking six of the top nine places to handily win the event, while the No. 23 women finished second behind No. 12 Penn State.
Pack running got the Orange to their second meet win of the season on the men's side. Iliass Aouani (25:41) finished second overall to lead the Orange through the 5.2 mile course. He was closely followed by teammates Kevin James (25:44), Noah Affolder (25:51) and Joe Dragon (25:51), who finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Simon Smith rounded out the 'Cuse scoring with a seventh place finish (26:08), while Dominic Hockenbury piled on a ninth-place finish (26:22) for good measure. Stephen Schulz placed 36th overall as well.
'Cuse picked up 21 points, easily defeating Penn State (57) for the top-spot. St. Joseph's (89), Navy (99), and Georgetown (128) rounded out the top-five in team points, while ACC foe Pitt finished sixth (153).
For the women, it was Madeleine Davison (21:03) who led the way with a fourth-place finish, while Rachel Bonner (21:03), Abigail Spiers (21:20) and Mary Malone (21:27) each turned in top-10 finishes with fifth, ninth and 10th place finishes. Olivia Elston (27th/22:16), Emma Wilson (29th/22:17) and Maggie Toczko (31st/22:18) also competed for the Orange.
The Nittany Lions took the win with 32 points, while SU finished with 55. Georgetown (73), Cornell (87) and West Virginia (127) completed the top five in women's team scoring. The other ACC squad in the field, Pitt placed seventh.
The success came with a limited roster on both sides as Interim Head Coach Brien Bell continues to ease his roster into the year. Numerous expected contributors were held out, including returning track All-American Aidan Tooker, whose outdoor campaign stretched late into the summer, among others.
The Orange will resume their season in two weeks when the team travels to Boston for the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown on Sept. 21.
