SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse women's lacrosse associate head coach Regy Thorpe is going pro! Thorpe has announced he will leave the program after the 2019 season to become general manager and head coach of the New York National Lacrosse League (NLL) team that will begin play in December. Thorpe has been a member of head coach Gary Gait's staff since 2010.
Â
"I would like to thank Gary and all of the assistant coaches and staff members who I have had the privilege of learning from over the years," Thorpe said. "An opportunity to coach at your alma mater is a dream come true and I have lived that dream for the last nine seasons. To all of the players over the years – thank you for paddling and battling with me. I hope that my wife, Amy, and I have left a lasting imprint on your lives like you have on ours. But with all this said, my only focus right now is on Syracuse players and the 2019 season and our game versus Connecticut."
Â
"I'm very excited for Regy as he takes on his next challenge in his coaching career," Gait said. "I have been fortunate to have Regy on my staff for the past 10 years. It's not very often you can keep a coach at his level for that length of time. He has been an integral part of Syracuse women's lacrosse and will be missed as we move forward. I look forward to working with Regy and making another run at the 2019 ACC and NCAA Championships! Regy will always be a part of Orange lacrosse as a coach and alum."
Â
Thorpe was promoted to associate head coach in 2015. He has helped guide the Orange to unprecedented success during the last nine seasons. Syracuse has an overall record of 142-56 and eight NCAA Tournament appearances with Thorpe on the sideline. The Orange have advanced to the national semifinals in six of those years and the national championship game twice.
Â
A 1993 All-American for the Orange men's lacrosse team, Thorpe has helped produce 21 IWLCA All-Americans, six IWLCA Player of the Year honorees, and six Tewaaraton Award finalists.
Â
Syracuse begins preparations for the 2019 campaign on January 19 and opens the season on February 8 against Connecticut at 3 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
