Orange, RIT End in 1-1 Tie

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's hockey team (8-19-3, 8-6-2 CHA) traded blows with RIT (11-14-5, 7-8-1 CHA) all night long, but neither team was able to score the game-winner, ending the season series between the Orange and the Tigers with a 1-1 tie.
The teams each scored first-period goals before their respective goalies put on a clinic to force the game to a draw.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse picked up where it left off last night, continuing to spray shots at RIT goaltender Terra Lanteigne. Midway through the first, a shot off the stick of forward Kelli Roswell found its way past Lanteigne, putting the Orange up 1-0 with 12:35 left.
The Tigers didn't take long to respond, however. Forward Kendall Cornine got RIT on the board by beating Syracuse netminder Ady Cohen on her glove side. The teams entered the first intermission tied at 1-1.
The second period was all Syracuse, but Lanteigne stopped all each of the 14 shots that Syracuse put on net. Syracuse's defense, meanwhile, made it an easy period for Cohen, who faced just two shots - both of which she saved.
The deadlock continued into the third. Syracuse, however, had an opportunity to break the game open when forward Lauren Bellefontaine was all alone in front of the RIT net with 4:56 left in regulation.
The shot went to Lanteigne's glove side, but the RIT goaltender stuck her arm up and caught the puck to keep the score at 1-1. Forward Brooke Avery also nearly scored the winner, firing off a shot with just under a minute to go that beat everyone but the post.
No breakthroughs occurred in overtime either, as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
OF NOTE
Syracuse put 83 shots on goal over the weekend. The Orange record 40+ shots on net in three of four games against RIT this season.
The Syracuse defense limited RIT to 16 shots on goal, tying the opposing season low set on Oct. 19 against Lindenwood. In addition to the season-low shots on goal, the defense blocked another 18 shot attempts.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
Syracuse is back in action for its final home series this season when Lindenwood comes to Tennity Ice Pavilion for two games on Feb. 22 and 23. Puck drops at 7 p.m. on Feb. 22, and 3 p.m. on Feb. 23.
