SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The final weekend of the regular season carries serious implications for the Orange.
The Syracuse women's hockey team vies for a first-place conference finish and fights for playoff position when it travels to Robert Morris, the current conference leader, for a two-game showdown. The series begins at 7 p.m. Friday, March 1, with the puck dropping at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 2 in the second game.
WHAT'S NEW WITH THE ORANGE
Syracuse is tied for second with Mercyhurst in College Hockey America standings with a 10-19-3 overall record, including a 10-6-2 mark in conference play. The Orange, who are 4-1-1 in their last six games, are three points behind conference leader Robert Morris.
The Orange come into the weekend scorching hot, most recently sweeping conference opponent Lindenwood. Freshman forward Abby Moloughney scored the game-winning goal on a penalty shot in overtime in Syracuse's 5-4 win last Friday. She scored twice more in the Orange's 5-1 win Saturday.
Moloughney and sophomore forward Emma Polaski earned weekly awards from the conference after they both recorded five-point weekends in the sweep over Lindenwood. Moloughney was Rookie of the Week, while Polaski, who scored once and logged four assists in the series, was Player of the Week.
SCOUTING THE COLONIALS
Robert Morris sits atop the conference standings with 25 points. The Colonials are 13-13-6 overall and 11-4-3 in CHA play this season.
The Colonials are 1-2-2 in their last five games. Robert Morris split its most recent series, winning one of two games against Mercyhurst last weekend.
Forward Jaycee Gebhard is the conference's leading scorer with 47 points this season. She has scored a team-high 18 goals and has a team-leading 29 assists. Both totals lead the conference.
ABOUT THE SERIES
The Orange and Colonials are 17-17-9 against each other. Syracuse holds the advantage when playing at Robert Morris, leading 7-6-7 in the series.
Syracuse and Robert Morris split a two-game series at Tennity Ice Pavilion earlier this season. Redshirt junior defenseman Lindsay Eastwood's game-winning goal lifted the Orange to a 3-2 overtime victory in the first game, but the Colonials defeated Syracuse, 5-1, in the second game.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The postseason is up next. The Orange next head to Buffalo, N.Y., for the CHA Tournament, which begins March 6 at the Harborcenter.
