Klimek Scores a Pair of Goals in Orange Tie
12/6/2020 5:31:00 PM | Ice Hockey
University Park, Pa. -- Senior Victoria Klimek scored a pair of goals and senior goalie Allison Small set a career-high with 44 saves in Syracuse University's 2-2 tie at Penn State. The Orange (1-3-1 overall, 1-2-1 College Hockey America) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on Klimek's goals, which she scored within six minutes of each other. After neither team scored in the second period, Penn State (3-0-1, 3-0-1) tied the game with two scores midway through the third period. Each team had four shots on goal in the overtime.
Â
"It was good to see us come out flying today and build the 2-0 lead," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "Unfortunately, Penn State capitalized o a couple of third period turnovers in our end to tie it up."
Â
Small's 44 saves ties for ninth on Syracuse's single-game record list. The last time an Orange goalie turned away more than 44 shots was Maddi Welch at Wisconsin in 2018. She ranks sixth in Syracuse history with 762 saves in 29 games and has had more than 30 saves in 11 of those contests.
Â
In the first period, Klimek scored 13 minutes into the game on a power play goal, assisted by Anna Leschyshyn and Tatum White. Less than six minutes later she gave the Orange a 2-0 lead scoring a goal on assists from Jessica DiGirolamo and Sarah Thompson. Klimek, who has scored at least two goals in a game three times in her career, also scored in Syracuse's 2-1 loss yesterday, becoming the first Syracuse player to score in back-to-back games since DiGirolamo did that in 2018.
