Syracuse forward Anna Leschyshyn recorded her second career multi-goal game in a 5-2 win against Long Island at Tennity Ice Pavilion on Friday. It is the third time in the last four games that the Orange has had a multi-goal skater. Leschyshyn was one of 10 Syracuse players to notch a point. The Orange (7-8-1 overall, 6-6-1 College Hockey America) return to the ice tomorrow at 2 pm to wrap up the series against LIU. The game will be streamed live on Cuse.com.
Â
"In the third period we had more of a sense of urgency," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "Early on our kids were a little sluggish, but in the third we had pretty good energy. I am going to go with how we finished and hopefully we carry that into tomorrow. I thought Anna (Leschyshyn) played really well, and not just because she scored two goals. The nature of her goals were nice, she picked some corners. She also drove to the net and drew a penalty that led to us scoring on the subsequent power play. (Emma being out tonight) gave her a chance and that's what you look for – when someone can't play you have someone step up."
Â
Leschyshyn started the scoring in the first period with a shorthanded goal on an assist by senior defender Kristen Siermachesky, who fed the puck to Leschyshyn on to the attack. Just before the end of the first period, junior defenseman Shelby Calof found the back of the net on assists from Leschyshyn and freshmen forward Tatum White.
Â
The teams traded goals in the second period. Long Island cut the Orange lead to one, 2-1, midway through the period. Sytracuse junior Lauren Bellefontaine tallied a power play goal with less the 40 seconds remaining in the period to make it a two goal game, 3-1, on assists from sophomore defender Mae Batherson and junior forward Abby Moloughney.
Â
In the third period, Leschyshyn put the 'Cuse up 4-2 with a goal on a set-up from senior defenseman Jessica DiGirolamo. After the Sharks scored their second goal of the game almost 12 minutes into the final period, White sealed the win on a power play goal with six minutes remaining. Redshirt junior Marielle McHale and sophomore forward Madison Beishuzen assisted on the goal.
Â
In her first career collegiate start, freshmen goaltender Amelia Van Vliet recorded 19 saves.
