#2 Orange Defeat #25 Hokies to Stay Unbeaten

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 2 Syracuse scored nine unanswered goals to erase a two-goal deficit and posted a 17-10 victory against No. 25 Virginia Tech on Saturday in the Carrier Dome. The win improves the Orange's record to 6-0, which is their best start since the 2017 campaign.
"It was definitely a slow start to the game today," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "We came out after halftime and put a solid second half together. I'm happy about it and we move on with the W to the next game."
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orange (6-0, 4-0) led 4-2 after Emma Tyrrell's goal at the 22:08 mark before Virginia Tech's Emma Crooks sparked the Hokies' offense on a 5-0 scoring run. She netted back-to-back goals to start the stretch and her third goal at the 8:35 mark put Virginia Tech ahead, 7-5.
The teams traded scores before juniors Meaghan Tyrrell and Megan Carney recorded the final two goals of the half to send the teams to the locker room tied 7-7 at halftime.
The Syracuse offense kept the momentum going after intermission as the Orange scored the first seven goals of the second half to build a 14-7 advantage. Tyrrell had two goals during the run, while junior Sierra Cockerille scored a goal and dished out two assists. Two of the seven goals came off fast breaks started by goalkeeper Asa Goldstock on the clear.
Virginia Tech (3-6, 0-4) ended its scoring drought of 29:01 with Sara Goodwin's goal with 14:33 remaining. Another goal by Paige Petty cut the lead to five, but Carney recorded three of the game's final four goals for the 17-10 victory.
OF NOTE
Carney scored a career-high six goals to go along with one assist for seven points. She set her career high with nine points against the Hokies as a freshman.
Tyrrell scored four goals and finished with six points. She now leads the team in points (27) and is tied with Carney for the top spot in goals (16).
Graduate student Ella Simkins posted a career-high eight draw controls. With the combination of sophomore Katelyn Mashewske, junior Braelie Kempney and graduate student Morgan Widner taking the draws, the Orange held a 19-10 advantage in the circle.
Syracuse outshot Virginia Tech, 41-27, while both teams picked up 16 ground balls. Goldstock finished with eight saves, while Angie Benson recorded 11 saves for the Hokies.
