Orange Win 15th Straight Home Opener at Coyne

Syracuse faces Vermont Sunday at 2 p.m.
Syracuse earned its 15th-straight home opener win with a 7-0 shutout victory over Sacred Heart (0-1) to start the 2021 season Friday afternoon. The No. 14 Orange were led by Pleun Lammers who had a hat trick and added an assist for seven points. Four different Orange scored in the win and freshmen goalkeepers Louise Pert and Brooke Borzymowski combined for their first shutout at Syracuse. 'Cuse returns to action Sunday at 2 p.m. when the Orange host Vermont at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
It didn't take long for the Orange (1-0) offense to get going as Lammers found the back of the goal with a long shot from the top of the circle just 90 seconds into the match. Clara Morrison's first goal of the season, which was scored off a saved shot, put Syracuse up 2-0 early in the second quarter.Â
Midway through the second quarter Tess Queen scored her first of two goals in the 23rd minute. Lammers' second goal was in the final 30 seconds in the first half when she snuck a shot past Sacred Heart's goalkeeper Erin Burgess to make it a 4-0 game.Â
Juniors Hailey Bitters and Clara Morrison connected in the 39th minute for a 5-0 lead when Morrison deflected the ball from the goal line to find Bitters wide open for the finish. Lammers helped Queen secure her second goal of the game when she connected in the corner for tip-in, opening Syracuse's lead to six goals and with four seconds to to play in regulation Lammers had her hat trick with a shot that rolled ver the goal line for the 7-0 win.Â
The Orange outshot Sacred Heart 32-2 and had a game-high 17 shots in the second period. SHU's Erin Burgess made nine saves in the first half before Samantha Maresca came in to play the second half making three saves of her own. Syracuse's Pert was awarded the win in her first career start and recorded a save in the only shot on goal Sacred Heart had in the game.Â
Syracuse improves to 1-0 to start the season and returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 29 when the Orange host Vermont at 2 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ACCNXÂ through the ESPN app.Â
