Varsity Eight Takes Eighth at Head of the Charles
10/23/2022 3:59:00 PM | Women's Rowing
The Syracuse varsity eight finished eighth and the second varsity eight took 20th in the Women's Championship Eight at the Head of the Charles on the Charles River in Cambridge, Mass.
"The results today are positive for our program," said head coach Luke McGee. "We are much more competitive internally and externally and are in the game with top crews from the 2022 NCAA Championship. The rowers who did not make this trip are making us stronger, as well. I am sure many of those rowers have intentions making one of these boats, and that just helps us get better as a program."
Senior Hannah Murphy coxed the varsity eight, which finished sixth among college boats, finishing the three-mile course in 15:33.833. The boat included stroke Izabela Krakic, seven-seat Kamile Kralikaite, six-seat Annika Maxson, five-seat Emmie Frederico, four-seat Ellie-Kate Hutchinson, three-seat Alena Criss, two-seat Zoe Acosta and bow Aphrodite Gioulekas.
"The varsity eight is a group of individually strong and talented rowers who have great experience," McGee said. "They have been able to come together, blend their strength and experience, and perform well as a crew."
The second varsity eight covered the course in 16:04.214, finishing 17th among collegiate boats, ahead of the varsity eight boats from six schools and fourth among the second varsity eight boats. The crew included senior coxswain Louise Rath, stroke Kaitlyn Dennis, seven-seat Junior Ognovich, six-seat Lena Radke, five-seat Heather Stafford, four-seat Haley Uliasz, three-seat Grace Loveridge, two-seat India Aikens and bow Lea Dahn.
"The second varsity eight performance relative to other program's varsity and second varsity boats is super encouraging," McGee said. "It is a really good sign for us and speaks to the depth of the program."
