'Cuse Battles at #15 Princeton
11/12/2022 6:15:00 PM | Ice Hockey
Syracuse battled #15 Princeton in a 1-0 loss on Saturday at the Hobey Baker Memorial Ice Rink. Orange (5-9-1 overall, 4-0 CHA) goaltender Arielle DeSmet had 31 saves, including a point-blank stop on a Princeton (3-3, 1-3 ECAC) breakaway with 1:26 left in the second period that held the Princeton lead to one.
Â
"Our defensive play was better today and was reflected in the score," said head coach Britni Smith. "I thought we created enough opportunities for ourselves offensively to tie the game up, especially in the third, but struggled to hit nets and convert. I think we have found some consistency in lineup over the past couple of weekends and now it will be important to develop some chemistry and predictability within our lines. Special teams have typically been a spark for our game and I thought Princeton did a good job neutralize that this weekend. Our penalty kill continued to get the job done but we struggled a bit on the power play. We will get back to work again this week as we gear up for another road trip and get back into conference play."
Â
Princeton's Issy Wunder scored the lone goal in the game with 2:16 left to play in the first period.
Â
DeSmet recorded 54 saves in the two-game series, increasing her career total to 1,828, which ranks second on Syracuse's career record list. Junior defenseman Hannah Johnson blocked three shots on Saturday and five in the series. She has 98 career blocks, which is 15th on the Syracuse career blocked shots chart.
Â
Syracuse will return to College Hockey America play next weekend with a series at Mercyhurst on Friday, Nov. 18 (6 pm) and Sat., Nov. 19 (2 pm). The games will be streamed on FloHockey.com.
