Orange Win at Home

Forward Darci Johal tied the game with a goal and less than two minutes later assisted on the game-winner by Kate Holmes to propel the Orange to a 3-2 win against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Saturday at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Johal centered a pass from the board to Holmes in the slot and then Holmes put the puck in the back of the net with 6:49 remaining in the second period. Syracuse goalie Allie Kelley and the Orange (3-3-0 overall) defense kept RPI (4-1-3) off the scoreboard in the final period to secure the win. Kelley had 13 of her 32 saves in the final 20 minutes.
Â
"I thought we played a fantastic team game tonight," said head coach Britni Smith. "We talked about playing a complete 60 minutes and having all 23 involved. I was very proud of the way we rebounded from yesterday. You could tell as the game went on that our confidence grew and our bench got more energy and excitement. That is something we will look to carry into next week."
Â
In the first period, Syracuse trailed 1-0 when the defensive line combination of Rachel Teslak and Jocelyn Fiala connected on the game-tying goal. Fiala centered a pass to Teslak in the slot who fired a shot into the top left corner of the net for the goal. RPI scored again to take a 2-1 lead with just more than five minutes left in the opening period.
Â
In the second period, Johal tied the game on shot from the right circle to score a power play goal with 8:46 remaining. Defenseman Alexandria Weiss fed a pass to Johal from the blue line for the assist. Holmes scored the game-winner with 6:48 left to play in the second period.
Â
Kelley, who ranks in the top 15 nationally in save percentage, has recorded at least 28 saves in the last four consecutive games.
Â
"Allie is someone we are going to rely on heavily to make sure that she is the backbone of our defensive corps," Smith said. "She does a great job making sure that she is calm in the net and that provides confidence and calmness in front of her."
Syracuse will play at #10 Cornell on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 7 pm in Ithaca, NY.
