SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 4 Syracuse will face a top-five opponent for the second consecutive game when it hosts No. 2 Maryland on Friday, February 17 in the JMA Wireless Dome. Both teams enter the game with 1-0 records this season.

The Orange will host Student Night and Pink Out to raise awareness for breast cancer at Friday's game.

ORANGE UPDATE
Syracuse defeated then No. 4 Northwestern, 16-15, in the season opener last Saturday in the JMA Dome. Graduate student Meaghan Tyrrell led the way with eight points on two goals and a career-high six assists. She was named Offensive Player of the Week by the IWLCA and ACC. Senior Delaney Sweitzer made a career-high 11 saves in goal.

WELCOME BACK
The Orange had three players return to the lineup after missing all of or significant parts of last season. Junior Emma Ward, who missed the entire 2022 season due to injury, was part of the starting lineup. Graduate student Sierra Cockerille and senior Emma Tyrrell also returned after suffering season-ending injuries a year ago.

SCOUTING THE TERRAPINS
Maryland opened the 2023 campaign with a 15-5 victory against Saint Joseph's. Jordyn Lipkin and Chrissy Thomas scored three goals apiece to lead the Terrapin offense. Emily Sterling made eight saves in goal in just less than 50 minutes of play.

The Terrapins are coming off a 19-2 record last season when they advanced to the national semifinals before losing to Boston College, 17-16.

THE SERIES
Friday's game marks the 26th all-time meeting between Syracuse and Maryland. The Terrapins lead the series with the Orange, 23-2.

The last meeting between the two teams was in 2020 in College Park. Emily Hawryschuk had two goals and an assist in the first half to help the Orange to a 4-0 halftime lead. The squads traded goals to start the second half before Maryland scored three straight to cut the lead to 5-4. With 'Cuse leading 6-5, Hawryschuk scored on an assist from Sam Swart, sparking Syracuse on a 4-0 scoring run to end the game for the 10-5 victory. Hawryschuk finished with five goals, including the 200th of her career, while Asa Goldstock made eight saves, including the 500th of her career.
