Orange Battle #10 Penn State
2/4/2023 7:09:00 PM | Ice Hockey
Syracuse and #10 Penn State played two periods of scoreless hockey before the Nittany Lions tallied a goal early in the third period at Tennity Ice Pavilion on Saturday. Penn State then opened up a 4-0 lead before Orange senior Mae Batherson tallied a goal to make the score 4-1. The goal is Batherson's 14th career tally, which ties for fifth on the Orange career goal by a defenseman record list. Forwards Marielle McHale and Rayla Clemons assisted on the goal.
Â
"That was probably our most consistent 60 minutes this season. I am really happy with our fight and really proud of their effort. I thought that was a great game," said head coach Britni Smith. "We fought for 60 minutes. We weathered storms when we needed to do so, and we were able to find our opportunities. Now we have to worry about capitalizing."
Â
Syracuse (9-20-2, 6-7-1 CHA) goaltender Arielle DeSmet recorded 31 saves in the game, increasing her season saves total to 781, which ranks second on the Orange single-season record list. It is her 10th game this season with 30-or-more saves. Penn State (20-8-2, 10-1-1 CHA) had goals from four different players in the win.
Â
"Arielle was great today," Smith said. "I think she wanted a couple back yesterday so to see her response today and how she played today is great."
Â
Syracuse will close the regular season at home. The remainder of the home-stand includes a series against Mercyhurst (Feb. 10 and 11) and Senior Day against Stonehill on Feb. 18. All kids in attendance at all games are invited to join the Kids Corner to welcome the Orange onto the ice before each period.
Â
"We just played a very tight game against a top-10 team so we have to come next weekend ready to play the same 60 that we played today. That comes from playing a simple game for us. We need to buy in to that simple, gritty hockey."
