#1 Orange Extend Winning Streak Against #6 Seawolves

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 1 Syracuse used a 6-0 scoring run to pull away from No. 6 Stony Brook and record a 16-11 victory in the JMA Wireless Dome on Wednesday. The Orange are off to the best start in program history, improving their record to 10-0.

The win was the fourth for Syracuse against an opponent ranked in the top 10 and sixth against a top-20 foe this season. The 10-game winning streak marks the sixth double-digit run in program history.

Megan Carney scored a season-high six goals in the victory, while Emma Ward tied her career high with seven assists. In addition, Olivia Adamson posted a career-best 12 draw controls.

HOW IT HAPPENED
For the first time this season, Syracuse did not score the opening goal as Stony Brook (5-2) jumped out a 2-0 lead. The Orange eventually tied the score at 3-3 for the first of six ties in the first half. Emma Tyrrell scored three of her four goals in the first quarter that ended in a 5-5 tie.

Morgan Mitchell's sixth goal of the day gave the Seawolves an 8-7 lead with 5:48 left in the second quarter before the Orange took over. Carney scored back-to-back goals to give 'Cuse the lead for good. Tyrrell followed with her fourth of the day and Maddy Baxter found the back of the net with four seconds on the clock to send the Orange to the locker room with an 11-8 lead. Ward assisted on the final three goals of the half.

Back-to-back Syracuse goals to start the second half pushed the advantage to 13-8 before Mitchell ended the Seawolves' scoring drought of more than 19 minutes to cut the lead to four heading to the fourth quarter. Carney scored on another assist from Ward and back-to-back goals from Tessa Queri gave the Orange their biggest lead of the night at 16-9. The Seawolves added a pair of goals in the final 6:03 for the 16-11 final.

While the 'Cuse offense was clicking, the Orange defense shut down Stony Brook in the second half. It held the Seawolves to just nine shots and forced nine turnovers. Goalkeeper Delaney Sweitzer made eight saves, picked up three ground balls and caused a turnover in the win.

Carney continues to climb Syracuse's all-time record lists. She increased her career point total to 249 and moved past Hallie Quillinan (246 points) for eighth place on the school leader list. In addition, she climbed one spot on the career goals list to eighth place with 173.

Ward dished out seven assists for the second time this season. That number ties her for the second-highest single-game total in program history.
