#9 Maryland Tops #5 Orange in OT

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 9 Maryland scored 37 seconds into the second three-minute overtime session to defeat No. 5 Syracuse, 9-8, in women's lacrosse action in the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday. The game featured six ties as neither team led by more than two goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orange (1-2) trailed, 3-1, after the first quarter but outscored the Terrapins (2-0), 3-0, in the second quarter to take a 4-3 lead heading into intermission. Olivia Adamson continued Syracuse's scoring run with the first goal of the second half to extend the advantage to 5-3.

Kori Edmondson found the back of the net for Maryland, ending the Terrapins' scoring drought of more than 22 minutes. Edmondson's second of the day less than three minutes later tied the score at 5-5.

The teams were tied at 7-7 after three quarters and 8-8 at the end of regulation. Both teams had offensive possessions in the first three-minute overtime session but could not convert. That session ended with a Syracuse green card, giving Maryland possession heading into the second three minutes.

The Terrapins' first shot went wide, but they recovered the ground ball and Hannah Leubecker's third goal of the day gave Maryland the victory.

The final statistics were as close as the score. The Terrapins outshot Syracuse, 28-24, while both teams picked up 17 ground balls. Syracuse held a 12-9 advantage in the draw circle.

'Cuse goalkeeper Delaney Sweitzer recorded 10 saves, marking the second double-digit save performance of the season and 10th of her career.

Saturday's crowd of 2,097 was the fifth-largest, single-game total in program history. It marks the sixth time the Orange have drawn 2,000+ fans for a game that was not counted as part of a doubleheader with the Syracuse men's team.
