#7 Orange Dominate in 20-5 Win Against #9 UNC

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 7 Syracuse jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 20-5 victory against No. 9 North Carolina in the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday. The Orange move to 5-3 overall and stay unbeaten in the ACC, improving to 4-0 in league action.

Emma Tyrrell led a balanced 'Cuse offense as she tied her career high with eight points (5g, 3a) as she became the 11th player in program history to record 200 career points. Natalie Smith tied her career high with four goals, while Emma Ward finished with five points on two goals and three assists. Overall, eight different players scored at least one goal, with six players finding the back of the net multiple times.

Hallie Simkins anchored Syracuse's defense, which has now allowed just five goals in each of the last two games. Simkins recorded a career-high six caused turnovers to go along with four ground balls. The six caused turnovers tie for second on the Orange's single-game record list.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse opened the game with five-straight goals in a span of 2:18. Five different players scored during the run before North Carolina (6-3, 2-2) briefly halted the 'Cuse offensive outburst with Alyssa Long's free-position goal for a 5-1 Orange lead after the first quarter.

Leading 8-3 at intermission, Syracuse continued to extend its advantage after halftime. Olivia Adamson scored back-to-back goals to start the second half, helping the Orange outscore the Tar Heels, 7-1, in the third quarter. After the squads traded goals to start the fourth quarter, Smith tallied three unanswered goals and Tyrrell's goal with 20 seconds on the clock gave Syracuse its largest lead of the day at 20-5, which stood as the final.

Syracuse outshot North Carolina, 38-17, and won 18-of-27 draw controls against the Tar Heels, which entered the game ranked ninth in the nation in draw controls per game (17.38) and 10th in draw control percentage (.632).

The attendance of 2,982 is the largest single-game crowd in program history. It marks the eighth time the Orange have drawn more than 2,000 fans to game that was not part of a doubleheader with the Orange men's program.
