#7 'Cuse Comes From Behind To Beat #9 Cavaliers

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia – No. 7 Syracuse overcame an early four-goal deficit to defeat No. 9 Virginia, 15-14, in Charlottesville on Saturday. The win is the Orange's third against a top-10 opponent this season and extends the 'Cuse winning streak to four.

Maddy Baxter led the Syracuse offense with a career-high five goals. She was one of five players to score multiple goals for the Orange. Kate Mashewske recorded 18 draw controls, which was one shy of her career high as well as the single-game school record.

On the defensive end, Bianca Chevarie caused three turnovers and picked up five ground balls. Delaney Sweitzer finished with nine saves, three of which came in the fourth quarter when she allowed just one Cavalier goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Virginia (9-2, 3-2) jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but Syracuse (7-3, 5-0) responded with four-straight goals to even the score at 5-5. Baxter scored three of her goals during the run, and her third of the day to start the second quarter tied the score.

Neither team could pull away as the game was tied seven more times before the Cavaliers netted the final goal of the third quarter and the first of the fourth to take a 14-12 lead with 14:52 to play.

Olivia Adamson started the 'Cuse comeback when she scored on the assist from Emma Ward and Baxter netted her fifth goal of the day to tie the game at 14-14 with 9:50 remaining. The Orange went ahead for good on Emma Tyrrell's goal with 5:31 on the clock.

Virginia had chances for the equalizer, but Coco Vandiver and Tyrrell caused turnovers on back-to-back Cavalier possessions and Sweitzer stopped Kiki Shaw's shot with 16 seconds on the clock to secure the win.

OF NOTE
 Ward finished with two goals, giving her 101 in her career. She becomes the 16th player in program history to reach the milestone.

The Orange are in first place in the ACC standings with a perfect 5-0 record. The win improved Syracuse's record to 3-1 on the road this season.

The No. 7 Orange will take on yet another top-10 opponent when it hosts No. 8 Loyola on Wednesday, March 27 at 4 p.m. in the JMA Wireless Dome.
