No. 6 ranked and fourth-seeded Syracuse (12-4, 7-3 ACC) starts its postseason on Wednesday afternoon, set to take on No. 20 ranked and fifth-seeded Virginia (8-8, 6-4 ACC) in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Tournament at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.
Â
Opening Draw
Syracuse wrapped up its regular season schedule at 12-4 overall and 7-3 in the ACC. The regular season featured a 12-game winning streak, including seven victories over ranked opponents.
Â
Postseason Starts Now
Wednesday kicks off the postseason for Syracuse, the first under head coach Regy Thorpe. Many on the roster have postseason experience, with members of the senior class having reached two NCAA Final Fours as well as the 2024 ACC Championship Game.
Â
The ACC Tournament includes the top eight teams in the ACC regular season standings. Joining Syracuse and Virginia on their side of the bracket are top-seeded North Carolina and eighth-seeded Duke. With a victory, the Orange will take on the winner of the game between the Tar Heels and Blue Devils on Friday, April 24th at 5 p.m.
Â
The other side of the bracket features second-seeded Stanford taking on seventh-seeded Boston College and third-seeded Clemson meeting with sixth-seeded Notre Dame.
Â
Each game in the tournament will be played at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. and air on ACC Network. The championship game is set for a noon start on Sunday, April 26.
Â
The Back Line
Syracuse has been amongst the nation's top defenses all season, finishing the season tied for fifth nationally in goals-against average at 7.3. The Orange have kept some of the nation's top offenses in check, including holding Northwestern – a team that averages the sixth most goals in the nation at 15.4 per game – to just six goals.
Â
Izzy Lahah and Coco Vandiver lead the defensive unit, having logged 43 and 40 caused turnovers, respectively. They are the first pair of teammates in program history to each log 40 caused turnovers in a single season. Both are also closing in on the program's single-season record for caused turnovers, a record that is held by Katie Goodale who had 45 in 2024.
Â
Dan Guyette holds it down in cage for the Orange, ranking second in the nation in goals-against average at 7.02. She has compiled 104 saves to go with a .486 save percentage this season.
Â
Offensive Leaders
The offense has been led by sophomore attack Molly Guzik this season, ending the regular season with 37 goals and 10 assists. Caroline Trinkaus had a strong end to the season, scoring 12 goals in the final six games to end with 24 goals on the year.
Â
Mackenzie Rich and Ashlee Volpe lead the team in assists with 20 and 14, respectively. Rich has added 13 goals and Volpe has tallied 12.
Â
Orange Accomplishments
The Orange placed three on the Tewaaraton Award's Top-25 list last week with Dan Guyette, Molly Guzik and Coco Vandiver each being named finalists for the award.
Â
On top of the recognition from the Tewaaraton Award committee, Syracuse saw two players drafted in the WLL Draft, with Vandiver and Muchnick each being drafted by the California Palms.
Â
Scouting Virginia
The Orange and Virginia met earlier in the regular season, with Syracuse coming away with a 6-5 road win. The game came down to the wire, but Kaci Benoit deflected a pass with just seconds remaining to end the Cavaliers' final possession.
Â
Since falling to Syracuse in mid-March, the Cavaliers rattled off three ACC wins, including a 17-14 triumph over Boston College. They finished the regular season averaging 10.8 goals per game while holding foes to 11.1 goals per game.
Â
Madison Alaimo leads the team with 54 points, 40 of which came on assists. Kate Galica has a squad-best 35 goals and is among the league's top draw-takers, averaging 8.4 per game.
