SU Loses 57-54 at St. John's

QUEENS, N.Y. – Kia Wright scored 21 points to lead St. John's to a 57-54 BIG EAST victory against Syracuse on Saturday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena. Senior Chineze Nwagbo tallied a career-high 22 points for the Orange. Syracuse is 10-7, 2-4 in the BIG EAST. The Red Storm improves to 14-3, 3-3 in the conference.
Nwagbo also snagged 12 rebounds to earn her sixth double-double of the season. It was Nwagbo's first 20 point effort of her career. Freshman Jessica Richter finished with 14 points and eight boards. Freshman Vaida Sipaviciute and sophomore Tracy Harbut each chipped in six points. Senior Rochelle Coleman netted four points to go with five assists and four steals.
Wright was the only player in double figures for the Red Storm. Greeba Barlow finished with nine points on 3-of-4 shooting from three-point range.
SU led 4-2 early in the opening half and St. John's used an 8-0 run to take a 10-4 advantage. The Orange evened the score at 10-10 on a three-point play by Nwagbo with 11:29 remaining in the first half. Over the next eight minutes, SU was outscored by St. John's 20-8 and the Red Storm took a 12-point lead, the largest of the opening 20 minutes. Syracuse cut the lead to seven at 32-25 before St. John's pushed it back to 11. Nwagbo tallied a reverse layup to end the half and head into the break with trailing 27-36. Nwagbo had 10 points in the opening stanza.
The Red Storm led 41-29 early in second half, the largest lead of the final 20 minutes. SU went on a 13-2 run to cut the lead to one at 43-42 with 9:09 on the second-half clock. The two teams exchanged baskets to keep the lead at either one or three, until Wright nailed a three-pointer with 3:29 left in the game to make the score 50-46. SU cut the lead to two at 52-50 and Wright hit 5-of-6 free throws in the last 45 seconds to push the score to 57-50. Richter hit back-to-back baskets to end the game at 57-54.
Syracuse outplayed the Red Storm in the second half. The Orange held St. John's to 19.2% from the field in the second half, but SJU was 9-of-12 from the free-throw line. The Orange outscored the Red Storm 27-21 and outrebounded SJU 24-17 in the last 20 minutes. For the game, SU shot 40.8% from the field, while St. John's shot 32.8%. It marked the first time this season that the Orange has shot better than its opponent and lost. The Red Storm scored 18 points off turnovers and the Orange tallied only five points off turnovers.
The Orange travels to Morgantown, W. Va. for a matchup with the Mountaineers on Wednesday, January 26 at 7 p.m., before returning to Manley Field House to host Villanova on Saturday, January 29 at 1 p.m.
