SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior assistant captain Stefanie Marty scored back-to-back goals in a late Syracuse rally as the Orange cruised past Union, 4-1, on November 28 at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Marty's two goals, including one on a power-play opportunity, matched a season-high, while sophomore Megan Skelly and junior Gabrielle Beaudry added one a piece. The Orange improved to 7-6-1, while the Dutchwomen moved to 2-10-1 on the season.
"I give Union a lot of credit," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "They played very well, they were very disciplined. They didn't give us much, particularly early. We had some pretty timely scoring. Otherwise they were very disciplined and hard-working. We really had to answer the bell in the third period and I thought we did. A big part of it was the way they played. I don't think we adapted well early on when the score and shots were even for the first 40 minutes."
Both teams came out slow, as the game remained scoreless for the first 13:10. Syracuse jumped on the board when freshman forward Isabel Menard found Skelly, who bounced the puck off Union's Marissa Gentile for the lone goal of the period. The Dutchwomen answered 7:04 into the second period as sophomore Emilie Arseneault passed the puck to freshman Emma Rambo to tie the game at one. Junior Julie Rising teamed up with Marty for her first goal on the afternoon, who tipped the puck past Union's Alana Marcinko to give the Orange the advantage, 2-1, going into the third.
"We weren't getting a lot going on the power-play, even with 5-on-5, we weren't generating a lot of good chances at getting rebounds," Flanagan said. "We had a lot of shots right into the goalie and Stef (Marty) picked a corner on both of them. Both shots were similar where she just took it, got her head up and made a really good decision with the puck. She played a solid game."
Marty capitalized on a power-play opportunity after Union's Elsa Perushek was penalized for slashing at 12:12 of the third period. She continued her scoring streak after sophomore Taylor Metcalfe passed to freshman Jessica Sorensen from the blue line to pull the Orange ahead by two, 3-1, with less than 14 minutes to go. The momentum continued to swing in Syracuse's direction less than three minutes later after Menard dished out her second assist to Beaudry to make the final score 5-1.
Senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel turned away 23-of-24 shots, while Marcinko also finished with 23.
The Orange and Dutchwomen will rematch on Sunday, November 29 at 2 p.m. at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
