SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel overcame a last-minute Wayne State rally as the Orange defeated the Warriors, 3-2, at Tennity Ice Pavilion on Saturday afternoon. After leading by two, WSU cut the Syracuse lead with less than three minutes remaining, but Schoedel held of the Warriors' final efforts in the last 30 seconds to give the Orange its first win against Wayne State. SU improves to 9-7-1 on the season, while WSU is 4-7-3.
"It was a really hard-nose game up and down both ways," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "Both goaltenders played well. Obviously, it went right to the last two seconds. Lucy stole the game on that save. I thought our kids showed up with some energy and we learned some lessons from last night. Hopefully we can get some momentum going heading into next weekend."
After neither team scored in the first period, junior assistant captain Stefanie Marty received a pass from freshman Erin Burns and soared to the right of the net. Marty flicked the puck to the left past Delayne Brian to score her team-leading ninth goal of the season to give the Orange a 1-0 advantage less than two minutes into the second period. Less than six minutes later, freshman Isabel Menard found sophomore Lisa Mullan in front of the net, who shot through the legs of Brian to increase the Syracuse lead in the seventh minute of the period. Wayne State answered on Alyssa Baldin's power-play goal less than two minutes later to bring the Warriors within one heading into the final period.
The Orange used a 5-on-3 advantage halfway through the final period for its third goal, which was scored after senior assistant captain Brittaney Maschmeyer passed to Menard, who then tipped it off junior Julie Rising. Wayne State again cut the lead to one on Julie Ingratt's goal with less than four minutes remaining, but could not score the equalizer as the Orange held on for the victory.
Syracuse returns to Tennity Ice Pavilion for its final two-game series of 2009 against Princeton. The first game will be on Friday, December 11 at 7 p.m., followed by a 4 p.m. contest on Saturday, December 12.
