SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior assistant captain Stefanie Marty scored her team-leading 12th goal of the season as the Syracuse University women's ice hockey team was defeated by top-ranked Mercyhurst, 8-1, on Friday evening at Tennity Ice Pavilion. The Orange held off the hot-shooting Lakers' early, but its efforts could not control the No. 1 team in the nation. SU is 13-11-1 (4-3-0) this season, while CHA conference foe Mercyhurst improves to 17-1-3 (5-0-1).
"We felt pretty optimistic going into the game," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "We had to a lot to think about with this game. We had the No. 1 team in the country coming in here and it's an opportunity for us to show who we are against a team of that stature. The girls came out energized and there was a good crowd here, which made it a good atmosphere. I give Mercyhurst a ton of credit."
The Lakers came out shooting hot, but the Orange did not allow a goal until the 6-minute mark of the opening period. Lauren Jones circled the back of the net and shot the puck into the lower right corner of the net to open up the scoring, while Bailey Bram used the same technique less than three minutes later to hold the 2-0 advantage. Midway through the first period, senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel made a save, but a deflected puck off a Mercyhurst player gave MC possession and Ashley Cockell one-timed it into the net. The Lakers continued their dominant first period by closing out with a second goal by Bram, who went on a 2-on-1 breakaway from center ice, and headed into the second period with a 4-0 lead.
Despite the Orange outshooting Mercyhurst, 12-11, in the second period, Vicki Bendus added her team-leading 18th goal of the season within the first two minutes of the second period to further extend the Lakers' lead, while Jesse Scanzano scored the team's sixth with less than six minutes remaining.
Mercyhurst continued to roll as J. Christofferson scored early in the third period on a power-play opportunity. Syracuse responded when freshman Holly Carrie-Mattimoe and junior Julie Rising passed across the ice before dishing out the puck to Marty, who put Syracuse on the board at the 16:36 mark of the last period. The helper extended Carrie-Mattimoe's point-scoring streak to six games. Scanzano finished off the Lakers' efforts by scoring their final goal with just 11 seconds left to settle the score, 8-1.
Schoedel finished with 25 saves, while her counterpart, Hillary Pattenden, turned aside 20-of-21 shots.
The Orange and Lakers' will conclude their two-game conference series on Saturday, January 23 at 2 p.m. at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
