If you're coming to this website, you're probably aware of Syracuse University's reputation for first class academics and athletics, alumni base that includes leaders in every industry and global reach. Still, every now and then, days like yesterday remind us of SU's strong connection to the world's most significant city.
Mornings at Yankee Stadium, nights at a sold out Madison Square Garden, school colors and theme running through Times Square and the Empire State Building basking in orange don't just happen. (OK, the latter lighting may have been for the Food Bank of NYC, but whatever.)
On what could have been an ordinary Tuesday, Doug Marrone walked the field of the upcoming New Era Pinstripe Bowl and the #8 Orange men's basketball team claimed its fifth consecutive regular season MSG win, beating #7 Michigan St. 72-58.
Another great crowd of SU supporters was on hand at Madison Square Garden and all appear excited for the bowl. The Yankees have arranged to have Pinstripe Bowl participants put on clinics for local high school and youth players. That means that the Pinstripe Bowl will regularly attempt to improve the level of play downstate, which could help Marrone's program in the future even if Syracuse isn't in the game.
Going Up?: Some very generous alums hosted a pregame reception at a magnificent building just a couple of blocks from the Garden. The fact that the elevator stopped – with nobody getting on or off – on the 44th floor was a nice omen for the basketball game.
A partial list of the seen: Former basketball player division: Wendell Alexis, Derrick Coleman, Sean Kerins, Andy Rautins, Mike Sheehey, Pearl Washington. Media alum division: New York City talkers Seth Everett, Jason Horowitz and Adam Schein; ESPN fantasy football expert Matthew Berry.
Haven't We Seen This Movie Before: Syracuse and Michigan State hadn't played each other in basketball since the Cuse swept a home and home in the 2003 and 2004 seasons. I found it very telling of the stability around the programs that both coaching staffs showed their players video of those games in preparation for last night's Jimmy V Classic. Normally, coaches would concentrate on cutups of an opponent's most recent three to five games, but the Orange and Spartans are so resolute in their styles of play, that watching Gerry McNamara highlights from six years ago served as a perfectly appropriate preparation technique.
Matt's Musings: For 14 straight games since March 2, Arinze Onuaku , the basketball team's leading scorer has been a player whose name starts with “J”... Ever noticed that there's almost always a missed dunk in SU's first game of the season at MSG?... The Garden's extensive renovation plans call for a public catwalk of some sort across the top of the arena. Really? That should be interesting… Last season, SU was the last school standing undefeated in both men's and women's basketball. Quentin Hillsman's team has been ripping through its schedule so far and hosts #6 Ohio State Saturday at 1. The men meet winless Colgate at 7… Taxicab adventures: the one who dropped us off at the Yankees' billion-dollar ballpark in the Bronx pointed out “new stadium” in the same tone of voice you might use to suggest you noticed a friend's new haircut. The cabbie that brought us back after the basketball game was a broadcasting and boxing historian and a big Marty Glickman fan.
