SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The 2011-12 edition of the Syracuse women's basketball team takes the court at the Carrier Dome on Sunday when it opens the season against Long Beach State. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.The Orange is coming off back-to-back 25-win seasons and appearances in the Women's National Invitational Tournament quarterfinals.

ORANGE IN SEASON OPENERS
Syracuse is 27-13 (.675) all-time in season debuts, including a 72-69 victory last season against Northeastern at the Dome. This year's opener is only the fourth time in the past 19 seasons that SU has begun the year at home. Syracuse opens the season at home for the third consecutive year.
SERIES RECORD
Sunday's contest is the first between the two institutions on the hardwood. The Orange was 5-2 last season against first-time opponents.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ORANGE
The Orange returns 10 players, including three starters, giving SU 80.4 percent of its scoring and 88.8 percent of its rebounding back from the 2010-11 season. Leading the way for the Orange is Kayla Alexander. The junior center earned All-BIG EAST First Team honors last season and was selected to the 2011-12 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Also returning is senior Iasia Hemingway. Hemingway was an All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention selection last season. SU also welcomes back juniors Elashier Hall and Carmen Tyson-Thomas. Hall finished second on the team in steals last season and fourth in points. Tyson-Thomas ended the year third on the team in rebounds and steals.
SCOUTING LONG BEACH STATE
Long Beach State opened the season Friday with a 75-43 win against Utah State. The 49ers posted an 8-23 record last season. The roster includes two starters and nine letterwinners from last year's squad.
Senior Tipesa Moore is Long Beach State's top returning scorer after averaging 7.7 points per game in 2010-11. She reached double figures in scoring in 10 games.
