SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Senior guard Erica Morrow scored 17 points to lead Syracuse (18-7, 6-6) to a 53-45 victory against Louisville (16-10, 7-5) on Wednesday night at the Carrier Dome. The Orange held a 51-33 advantage on the boards, marking the 23rd time in 25 games that it has outrebounded the opposition.
“For us to come out and win this basketball game tonight is tremendous for this basketball team and tremendous for our program,” head coach Quentin Hillsman said. “They shoot the ball a lot better than they did but our guards and forwards do a good job down there eliminating three's.”
Morrow was 5-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-5 from behind the arc while adding six rebounds and a pair of assists. Sophomore center Kayla Alexander was second with 12 points, six rebounds and four blocks while junior guard Iasia Hemingway just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
Sophomore guard Carmen Tyson-Thomas helped the Orange to a 21-7 advantage in second-chance points with eight rebounds and six points while redshirt freshman Shakeya Leary added five rebounds.
Louisville opened the game on a 7-4 run through the first 3:28, but Morrow evened the score with a trifecta from the corner, 7-7. Louisville netted the next field goal to break the tie but the Orange responded with 10 unanswered to take a 17-9 lead with 8:16 remaining in the first half.
Syracuse outscored Louisville, 4-2, through the next three minutes to build its lead to 10, 21-11, with 4:53 left on the clock. The Orange increased its lead, 23-11, but Louisville scored the next eight sending the game into halftime with Syracuse leading, 23-19.
The teams traded baskets out of the break through the first six minutes with Syracuse maintaining at least a three-point advantage. Louisville cut the lead to one, 35-34, with 11:33 remaining in regulation but the Orange continued to maintain an advantage of at least one point up until 5:09 when the Cardinals evened the score, 43-43.
SU outscored UofL, 10-2, through the remainder of regulation to seal the 53-45 victory.
The Orange heads out for a two-game road swing beginning at rv/22 St. John's on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 3 p.m.
