SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- No. 2/1 Syracuse (1-1) had its eight-game winning streak in home openers snapped in a 19-11 setback to No. 4/4 Maryland (1-1) on Sunday, Feb. 17 in the Carrier Dome. The game was played in front of 1,445 fans, which is the third-largest attendance in school history.
Senior Michelle Tumolo led the Orange with six points on four goals and two assists. With her performance, she moved into fourth place on Syracuse's all-time scoring list with 238 points. Junior Alyssa Murray tallied four points on three goals and an assist. She now ranks ninth on the Orange's career goals scored leader list with 104.
A tight first half featured two ties as neither team led by more than two goals. Maryland netted three of the first four goals of the game before junior Katie Webster and Murray recorded back-to-back goals to tie the score at 3-3 at the 15:56 mark. The Terrapins went back up by two, but Tumulo and freshman Kayla Treanor tallied unassisted goals to again tie the score at 6-6 with 5:41 remaining.
Katie Schwarzmann broke the tie and gave Maryland the lead for good when she scored on an assist from Alex Aust with 3:33 to play in the half. Taylor Cummings added an unassisted goal to give the Terrapins an 8-6 halftime lead.
Maryland continued its scoring run in the second half, netting the first three goals after intermission to extend its lead to 11-6 at the 26:37 mark. Murray scored a twice to bring the Orange within four at 12-8, but that was as close as Syracuse could get. Schwarzmann, the 2012 Tewaaraton Trophy winner, found the back of the net four more times on her way to a game-high seven goals to lead the Terrapins to the victory.
"At times we saw some great potential from our team," Syracuse head coach Gary Gait said. "We kept battling back, but there was just a little too much in the second half. There's avlot to work on. There's lots of room for growth, which is great. We're young. We'll go back to work and be prepared and focus on our next opponent, Virginia."
The Terrapins outshot the Orange, 34-28, and picked up 17 ground balls to 15 for SU. Maryland also won 17-of-32 draw controls. Junior Alyssa Costantino recorded seven saves, while sophomore Kelsey Richardson had three saves for the Orange. Kasey Howard recorded 11 saves for the Terrapins.
