A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ORANGE
Syracuse had its eight-game winning streak in home openers snapped in a 19-11 setback against Maryland on Sunday, Feb. 17.
A tightly contested first half ended with Maryland on top by two goals. The Terrapins netted three of the first four goals of the game before juniors Katie Webster and Alyssa Murray recorded back-to-back goals to tie the score at 3-3 at the 15:56 mark. Maryland went back up by two, but the Orange responded with two consecutive goals to again tie the score at 6-6 with 5:41 remaining.
Katie Schwarzmann broke the tie and gave the Terps the lead for good when she scored on an assist from Alex Aust with 3:33 to play in the half. Taylor Cummings added an unassisted goal to give the Terrapins an 8-6 halftime lead.
Maryland continued its scoring run in the second half, netting the first three goals after intermission to extend its lead to 11-6 at the 26:37 mark. Murray scored a twice to bring the Orange within four at 12-8, but that was as close as Syracuse could get.
Senior Michelle Tumolo led Syracuse with six points on four goals and two assists. With her performance, she moved into fourth place on the Orange's all-time scoring list with 238 points. Murray tallied four points on three goals and an assist. She now ranks ninth on Syracuse's career goals scored leader list with 104.
