Orange Meets Wildcats in Rematch of National Final

EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 5/6 Syracuse (5-2) puts is three-game winning streak on the line when it takes on No. 4/4 Northwestern (8-1) on Saturday, Mar. 30 at 2 p.m. Eastern time in Evanston, Ill. The game is a rematch of last year's national championship game which the Wildcats won, 8-6.
Saturday's game will be televised on the Big Ten Network. The game will be broadcast live on WJPZ 89.1FM in the Syracuse area. Fans can follow the action on SUathletics.com with live audio on Orange All Access. Subscriptions to Orange All Access are available at daily, monthly and yearly rates.
NATIONAL FINAL REWIND
Syracuse and Northwestern last met in the 2012 national championship game at Stony Brook. Syracuse took an early lead but Northwestern ended the half on a 3-0 scoring run to take a 5-4 halftime lead. The Wildcats tallied the first goal of the second half to take a two-goal advantage with 19:04 remaining. Alyssa Murray converted a free position attempt and Michelle Tumolo followed with a goal to even the score at 6-6 with 11:08 to play. The Wildcats broke the tie at the 9:55 mark and added an insurance tally with 5:41 on the clock. The Orange had chances in its offensive end but couldn't convert as it lost 8-6 in its first appearance in the national finals.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ORANGE
Syracuse scored four goals in the first five minutes and went on to post a 17-12 victory at Boston College on Wednesday, Mar. 27.
Junior Alyssa Murray scored 33 seconds into the game to give the Orange an early lead. It marked the second consecutive game that SU has scored in the first minute. SU added three more goals and led 4-0 at the 25:53 mark. Boston College fought back and trailed 7-4 before Syracuse recorded four of the final five goals of the half to take an 11-5 lead into the locker room a halftime.
The Orange outscored the Eagles 4-2 in the first 23 minutes of the second half to take is largest lead of the game at 15-7. Boston College attempted to come, scoring four unanswered goals to cut SU's advantage to 15-11, but freshman Erica Bodt snapped the Eagles scoring streak and pushed the Orange's lead to 16-11 with 2:38 remaining with her first goal of the game. Both squads scored in the final minute of play for the 17-12 final.
Murray and senior Michelle Tumolo led the Orange offense with five points as each had two goals and three assists. Sophomore Kailah Kempney tallied a team-high three goals for her first hat trick of the season.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
Northwestern has won its last six contests and has an 8-1 record this season. The Wildcats' only loss was to No. 3/3 North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
Erin Fitzgerald leads Northwestern's high-powered offense, which ranks fifth in the nation. Fitzgerald leads the squad in points (61) and goals (29). Alyssa Leonard had 35 points (18g, 7a), while Amanda Macaluso has 22 points (16g, 6a). Overall, seven Wildcats have reached double figures in scoring this season. Bridget Bianco has started every game in goal for Northwestern. She has a 6.95 goals-against average and .500 save percentage.
Kelly Amonte Hiller is in her 12th season as head coach at Northwestern. She has guided the Wildcats to a record of 204-31 and seven national titles.
SERIES HISTORY
Northwestern leads the all-time series with Syracuse, 10-1. After Syracuse won the first meeting between the two schools in 2003, the Wildcats have won 10 in a row against the Orange. Three of the last four meetings have been decided by two goals or less, including both games last season. Northwestern defeated Syracuse, 11-9, in overtime in the Carrier Dome during the regular season and 8-6 in the national championship game.
