Sykes tallies first Syracuse double-double of 2015-16
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – It has been a long road for redshirt junior guard Brittney Sykes. Sykes missed 30 games since the first round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament due to injury, but has made her return to the court in 2015-16. She put together a complete effort against Jacksonville on Dec. 21 in her 10th game of the season.
Â
After back-to-back four-point outings, Sykes compiled 11 points, 10 rebounds, and four steals in the Orange's 65-49 victory against the Dolphins in the Carrier Dome. It marked the first Syracuse double-double of the 2015-16 campaign and the Newark, N.J. product's fifth of her collegiate career.
Â
"It's the effort," head coach Quentin Hillsman commented. "She is trying to get her legs under her. She is playing tough. She is really doing a good job of being aggressive and physical."
Â
With less than nine minutes remaining in regulation and the Orange up 20 points, Sykes exited the contest, one rebound short of the double-double. It appeared that the redshirt junior guard would have to wait until another night to get her fifth double-double of her career.
Â
Three minutes later, Hillsman reentered Sykes and she did not disappoint. She grabbed a defensive rebound off a missed free throw to notch the double-double. On the next Jacksonville possession, she recorded a steal, which led to a jumper from senior guard Brianna Butler. She was credited with her second assist of the night on that play, as well.
Â
Two seasons ago, Sykes led the squad in scoring, averaging 16.6 points per game, en route to All-Atlantic Coast Conference accolades. This season, she is proving she can do more than just score. Sykes is averaging 5.4 boards, 1.8 assists, and 1.9 steals per contest, as well.
Â
Sykes and the Orange are back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 29 when it hosts Drexel. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. Tickets can be purchased online, by phone at 1-888-DOMETIX, or by visiting the Carrier Dome box office (Gate B) during normal business hours. The Carrier Dome box office will be closed Dec. 24 – Dec. 26, Dec. 28, and Dec. 31. It will open three hours prior to tip time on Dec. 29 and Dec. 30 and will be accessible two hours before the start of the UTRGV contest on Jan. 1.
