'Cuse Downs Canisius, 13-11

BUFFALO, N.Y. – No. 4/5 Syracuse completed its suspended game at Canisius on Tuesday, May 3, recording a 13-11 victory against the Golden Griffs. The game began on April 3 before play was suspended due to snow. The Orange will now enter NCAA Tournament play with a 17-5 record.

Senior Kayla Treanor broke the single-season school record for draw controls in the victory. She had nine against Canisius, giving her 189 this season, surpassing the previous record of 186 set by Kailah Kempney last season.

The squads picked up the action with 6:05 on the clock and the score tied, 10-10. Senior Kelly Cross gave Syracuse an 11-10 lead with 3:42 on the clock, but Canisius (11-6) answered on Erica Evans' goal at the 2:57 mark to even the score at 11-11 for the fifth tie of the game. Six seconds later, senior Halle Majorana gave the Orange the lead for good when she scored on an assist from Treanor with 2:51 remaining. Cross added an insurance goal with 1:54 remaining to secure the 13-11 victory.

The first 53:55 was played a month ago. Canisius led, 4-2, but the Orange fought back and built a 10-7 lead with 16:26 on the clock in the second half. The Golden Griffs wouldn't go away and netted three consecutive goals to tie the score at 10-10 before play was suspended.

Cross (3g, 1a) and sophomore Riley Donahue (2g, 2a) finished with four points apiece, while Majorana (2g, 1a), Treanor (1g, 2a) and senior Gabby Jaquith (2g, 1a) had three points each.

Syracuse outshot Canisius, 24-22, while the Golden Griffs picked up 17 ground balls to 16 for the Orange. Syracuse held a 15-11 advantage in draw controls. Syracuse senior Allie Murray made six saves, while Rebecca VanLaeken had four saves for Canisius.

The Orange will learn their NCAA Tournament fate on Sunday, May 8 at 9 p.m. The selection show will air on NCAA.com.
