HAMILTON, N.Y. - Junior forwards Kelli Rowswell and Anonda Hoppner provided the Orange's offensive muscle, but the Syracuse hockey team could not come out on top against No. 10 Colgate. The Orange lost 4-2 to the nationally-ranked Raiders on Saturday afternoon inside the Class of 1965 Arena to close out the first half of their 2018-19 season.
Syracuse moves to 4-14-1 overall with the loss, maintaining a 4-3-0 record in College Hockey America play.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Rowswell's first goal of the year was also the game's opening goal. The native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, pushed a shot past Colgate goaltender Julia Vandyk while the Orange were shorthanded with 59 seconds left to play in the first period.
Syracuse's 1-0 advantage would not last long, however. In fact, it would only last eight seconds.
Colgate's Malia Schneider scored her first of two goals almost immediately after the ensuing faceoff, and the game would be tied at one entering the first intermission. Schneider struck again in the second period to make the score 2-1 before her teammate, Jessie Eldridge, scored the game-winning goal seven minutes into the third period.
While Hoppner cut Syracuse's deficit back to one a few minutes later, it was too little too late. Colgate would hold off the Orange's persistent attack, which totaled 13 shots on net in the final period, and score an empty-net goal with 10 seconds left to seal the win.
OF NOTE
Hoppner's goal was her fourth of the season, which is tied for third most on the team. Rowswell provided the assist on her teammate's tally and finished Saturday's contest with two points (1 goal, 1 assist).
Senior goaltender Maddi Welch came up with 21 saves. It's the fifth consecutive game in which she has recorded at least 20 stops.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange will reconvene in late December for a trip to Montreal, playing three exhibition games at the Theresa Humes Invitational from Dec. 28-30. The Orange face off against Nipissing, St. FX and host Concordia over the three-day period.
The regular season restarts Tuesday, Jan. 8, when Syracuse plays non-conference foe RPI in Troy, N.Y.
