MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Sophomore Kristen Siermachesky and junior Amanda Bäckebo scored their first career goals, but it was not enough to lead the Syracuse women's hockey team to victory.
The Orange closed out the 2018-19 regular season with a 4-2 loss at Robert Morris Saturday afternoon. Syracuse finishes the campaign with a 10-21-3 overall record, including a 10-8-2 mark and a third-place finish in College Hockey America standings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a quiet first period, the Colonials scored three unanswered goals in the second period and entered the intermission up, 3-0.
The Orange, who outshot Robert Morris throughout the game, did their damage in the final period. Siermachesky scored the first of her career off assists from junior forwards Savannah Rennie and Kelli Rowswell, her 13th of the season, to cut Syracuse's deficit to two.
After the Colonials scored their fourth goal midway through the third period, Bäckebo stepped up and delivered. She recovered a rebound and fired the puck into the back of the net, tallying her first career goal with five minutes left to go in regulation.
Bäckebo's goal cut into Robert Morris' lead, but it was too little late. The Colonials held on to win, 4-2.
OF NOTE
The Orange outshot Robert Morris, 32-17, in the game. Forwards freshman Abby Moloughney and sophomore Victoria Klimek each generated a team-high four shots on net.
Senior forward Sarah Steuhr and Klimek provided assists on Bäckebo's goal. It is the first assist of the season for both Steuhr and Klimek.
Senior goaltender Maddi Welch started between the pipes. She made 13 saves.
UP NEXT
The postseason is up next. The Orange now head to Buffalo, N.Y., for the CHA Tournament, which begins March 6 at the Harborcenter.
