CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 3/3 Syracuse's seven-game winning streak came to an end in an 11-5 setback at No. 6/5 North Carolina in a game that included two weather delays on Saturday in Chapel Hill. The Orange finish ACC play with a 5-2 league record.
Â
"It was a weird game with the delays and the conditions, but overall I thought our defense played really well," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "They had a great game. I thought Carolina played very well. They played smart, possessed the ball, not too many turnovers. We came up a little bit short on the offensive end of the field. Their goalie had an outstanding day and really shut us down. I think we lost some confidence in our finishing."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
North Carolina (11-3, 4-2) took advantage of two Syracuse yellow cards and jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but the Orange responded with three consecutive goals to even the score. Junior Emily Hawryschuk tallied back-to-back goals on assists from redshirt junior Mary Rahal and freshman Megan Carney before redshirt junior Morgan Alexander found the back of the net off a pass from senior Nicole Levy at the 12:43 mark.
Â
The Tar Heels posted the next two goals to go back up 5-3 with 6:59 on the clock. Syracuse had the final possession of the half with a chance to cut the deficit to one, but North Carolina goalkeeper Taylor Moreno made two of her 12 saves on shots from sophomore Sam Swart and Levy to give North Carolina a two-goal advantage at intermission.
Â
Tayler Warehime recorded the first three goals of the second half to give the Tar Heels an 8-3 lead at the 23:39 mark. Hawryschuk briefly halted the run with her third goal of the day before North Carolina posted back-to-back goals to take its largest lead of the day at 10-4. Both squads found the back of the net in the final 1:40 for the 11-5 final.
Â
OF NOTE
Hawryschuk has scored three or more goals in 13 of 16 contests and leads the squad with 54 goals this season. She now has 140 career goals, which tie her for ninth place on Syracuse's all-time leader list.

UP NEXT
Syracuse ends the regular season with a match up against Central New York foe Cornell on Tuesday, April 16. Opening draw in the Carrier Dome is set for 7 p.m. The Orange will honor their seniors in a pregame ceremony. Admission and parking are free. The game will be broadcast by ACC Network Extra.
