5/25/2022 4:47:00 PM | Field Hockey
Over the next few weeks, the incoming 2022 field hockey class will be announced. We continue the series with this week's Welcome Wednesday on Joy Haarman.
Â
Joy Haarman, a native of Alkmaar, Netherlands, will attend Syracuse University and play field hockey for the nationally-ranked Orange this fall while pursuing a master's degree.
Â
"Joy brings a tremendous amount of experience to Syracuse having played Hoofklasse for three years in the Netherlands," head coach Ange Bradley said. "She has great attacking ability, a good shot and strong goal scoring."
Â
Haarman is a versatile midfielder and attacker who plays in the Netherlands' Hoofdklasse with her current club HC Bloemendaal on the women's team. With her previous club team AH&BC, she helped the team finish in third place at the European Hockey League, and second place in the Hoodklasse finals.
Â
During her club career, Haarman has played with fellow Syracuse teammate Pleun Lammers for the Amsterdam team AH&BC in 2018 and was coached by Syracuse assistant coach Tim Broenink. She also played with current Syracuse grad student Quirine Comans while in the Netherlands. Â
Â
Haarman has played for the U16 team in the Netherlands and helped her team to a second-place finish in the 4-Nations Tournament and has participated in the 6-Nations Tournament.
Â
She has garnered recognition as the best player of the match in an international game with the Dutch U16 team against England where she scored two of her team's three goals.
Â
When asked what asked what legacy she hopes to leave behind for future Syracuse players, Haarman said "I want to be a part of the best Syracuse team ever and give it all to go for the championship. I want to show future Syracuse hockey players how joy and hockey can be combined for even better results. That hard work is fun and pays off."
Â
Haarman completes the recruiting class as the seventh player to commit to Syracuse for the 2022 season.
