EVANSTON, Illinois – No.5 Syracuse's fourth quarter comeback attempt came up just short in an 18-15 loss at No. 1 Northwestern in the season opener for both teams on Saturday, Feb. 10.

Junior Olivia Adamson scored a career-high six goals to lead the 'Cuse offense, while senior Natalie Smith had three goals. Senior Emma Ward added five points on tow goals and three assists.

Defensively, goalkeeper Delaney Sweitzer made 13 saves, marking the ninth double-digit save performance of her career.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Northwestern scored the first two goals of the game before Maddy Baxter scored Syracuse's first goal of the season. The Wildcats outscored the Orange, 6-1, for the remainder of the quarter to take their largest lead of the day at 8-2.

Syracuse trailed, 11-6, at halftime, but back-to-back goals by Smith and Baxter brought the Orange within three at 11-8. The Wildcats led 15-10 heading into the fourth quarter, but four unanswered goals by Syracuse cut the deficit to one with 8:16 remaining. Adamson scored back-to-back goals before Ward did the same.

Lindsey Frank halted the Syracuse scoring run with her third goal of the day, sparking Northwestern on a 3-0 scoring run that put the game out of reach. Adamson recorded her sixth tally of the day with nine seconds remaining for the 18-15 final.

The loss snapped Syracuse's 16-game winning streak in season openers.
