SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 5 Syracuse used 13 first-half goals to beat No. 18 Army, 18-7, in the home opener Wednesday inside the JMA Wireless Dome.

The Orange (1-1) extended their winning streak in home openers to 11 games, backed behind hat tricks from seniors Natalie Smith (4G, 2A) and Emma Ward (3G, 2A) and junior Payton Rowley (4G). Smith's six-point effort was a career-best for the midfielder.

Army (0-2) was paced by Brigid Duffy, who found the back of the net four times.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse opened the game on a 7-1 run, with goals coming from five different scorers. The Orange and Black Knights traded goals in the final 1:55 of the quarter.

'Cuse continued its offensive attack in the second quarter, grabbing a 12-2 advantage on Olivia Adamson's goal with 8:25 left in the half. The Orange headed into the break with a 13-3 lead.

The two teams traded two goals apiece in the third quarter, with Ward and Rowley scoring their third and four tallies of the game, respectively.

With 9:16 remaining in the game, sophomore Meghan Rode entered the scorebook in her collegiate debut, receiving the pass from Adamson in the front of the net for the score. Rode tallied her second of the contest with 1:18 remaining, giving Syracuse its largest lead of the day, 18-7.
